What to pack?
Pack layers
September can have warm and sunny days, but also cold and rainy ones. September is a transitional month in Salzburg, where you can experience the end of summer and the beginning of autumn. The average temperature in September is around 15°C, but it can range from 7°C to 22°C. To be prepared for any weather, pack clothing that you can layer on and off, such as sweaters, jackets, scarves, and hats for when it gets colder in the evening. We also recommend you check the weather forecast before you go and adjust your packing accordingly.
Pack comfortable shoes
Salzburg is a city that is best explored on foot. You will want to walk around the charming old town, visit the famous landmarks, and enjoy the scenic views. To do so, you will need comfortable shoes and a stroller that can handle the cobblestone streets and gravel surfaces. If you are feeling up for an adventure, you might also want to pack hiking boots and poles to explore the surrounding mountains and nature.
Pack a raincoat or umbrella
September is one of the rainiest months in Salzburg, with an average of 14 rainy days. Fingers crossed we have sunny weather but pack a raincoat or umbrella that you can easily carry with you and use when needed.
Pack some formal wear
Salzburg is a city that has a rich musical and cultural heritage. You might want to attend a concert, an opera, a ballet, or a theater performance while you are here.
When is comes to the wedding festivities. Dress to impress!
Friday
is tracht attire ‘AustrianTraditional’ style. Think of Sound of Music and Oktoberfest. Lederhosen for gentlemen and Dirndl for ladies.
Saturday
is cocktail attire ‘Garden chic’ style. Think natural colors, fresh fabrics, and floral prints. Jackets for the gentlemen and knee-length dresses for the ladies.
Sunday
is formal attire ‘Old Hollywood’ style. Think deep colors, elegant fabrics, and shimmering metallic accents. Suit and tie for gentlemen and floor length dresses for the ladies.
What to do?
Salzburg Austria is a charming city in the heart of Europe surrounded by mountains, lakes, and forests. It is the fourth-largest city in Austria, with a population of about 150,000 people. It’s not too big or too small. If you arrive by train, it takes you about 10-minute walk to reach Mirabell garden, the ideal place to start sightseeing and 25-minute walk to reach the fortress of Salzburg, the other end of the old town.
The old town alone of Salzburg is worth a stroll. It is easily walkable, largely car traffic free. Also, horse carriages are still available for a tour through town. You can visit the birthplace of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. You can also tour the Hohensalzburg Fortress, the largest fully preserved fortress in Central Europe. You can enjoy the baroque architecture of the Old Town and the magnificent gardens of the Mirabell Palace. Enjoy shopping on Getreidegasse, the main shopping street. Get an ice cream, sit down an Aperol Spritz in one of the many squares and just enjoy the lovely streets and old houses. www.salzburg.info/en/sights/top10/getreidegasse
You can also take a day trip to the nearby cities of Hallstatt, Vienna, Munich, or Innsbruck, which are all within easy reach by train or bus. Hallstatt, the picturesque alpine village at Lake Hallstatt, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. And the village that inspired the movie Frozen! maps.app.goo.gl/QmbfiDM9moUkkVxf7
There are three salt mines scattered around Salzburg, Hallein, Hallstatt, and Berchtesgaden, that you might want to visit. All three salt mines offer the same experience. www.salzwelten.at/en/salzburg
The Rupertikirtag is an annual festival taking place in downtown Salzburg for four days from Thursday, the 19th until Sunday the 22nd of September. Rupertikirtag is one of the most traditional folk festivals in Austria geared towards local shops, music, food and crafts. Children can see puppet plays or enjoy candy. Moms will love the arts and craft stores. Dads will best be parked at the beer tent (www.salzburg-altstadt.at/de/rupertikirtag/programm).
For those who arrive early feel free to join us after 5:00PM on Friday for pretzels and beer to kick off the wedding weekend!
Bring your Lederhosen, drindle, a good appetite for hearty alpine cuisine and thirst for beer or wine! Last serving is at 10 o’clock.
Our favorite places for coffee or a bite!
****FOR DINNER ALWAYS MAKE SURE TO RESERVE A TABLE IN ADVANCE.
Our version of a “New York style” delli, Coffee shop with all day breakfast. They also have the best apple strudel & Topefenstudel. Apfelstrudel is a Slice of Heaven Wrapped in Pastry Dough! In The Sound of Music, Maria sings about her favorite things, Apfelstrudel made the list. You can also order a Salzburger Nockerl
My favorite place to get snitzel!!! Also amazing beef tartar and burrata flammenkuchen (Austrian version of pizza).
Oldest restaurant in the world.
Vegetarian. Nice for breakfast or lunch. And where we went on our second date!
The home of the Sachertortea chocolate cake with layers of rich chocolate sponge cake filled with apricot jam and coated in chocolate ganache. This is Henning’s favorite cake!
Just at the river. Get a classic Austrian coffee, called “Verlängerter”, which is an espresso coffee filled up with hot water to make it “longer”. Tthis is our favorite place to spend an afternoon reading.
Hidden lunch spot near the modern museum/when your visit the castle with amazing view of the city. It’s a simple place and not a gourmet restaurant.
Central in old town, usually busy as popular but great people watching and great cakes.
Asian/American Fusion at the top of a hotel. Best view of the castle for sunset. Great for lunch, dinner or just cocktails!
Austria’s Oldest Wheat Beer Brewer and Bavarian food.
Traditional Mexican food! They have mezcal and margaritas!
Asain Fusion. Trendy restaurant. Ask to sit inside the cave.
Kitchen is open until 10PM! Classic Austrian in old town near the city center. Good for lunch or dinner. Order a Kaiserschmarrn for dessert.
Hidden tiny late night Austrian restaurant. I recommend trying Kaspressknödel and a Schnitzel variation. Kaspressknödel is a specialty in Salzburg and the West of Austria. They are tasty bread and cheese dumpling often served in soup as a starter, but here they can also be a main course.
Sophisticated fine dining and locally sourced food.
Italian food. This place is a hole in the wall – literally carved into the side of the mountain and 1 lady cooking and serving. She only has a few dishes and it’s all fresh ingredients
Hidden in a back alley just below the fortress, Pauli Stubm is the ultimate hidden gem.
(Thursday only 6am-12pm) The market is a cornucopia of fresh, seasonal fruits and vegetablesThere are also stalls selling local cheeses, meats, and other specialty products, such as honey, olive oil, and handmade crafts. By the way, the fried chicken at the entrance to the church is the highlight!
Monastic Brewery and tavern established in 1602
Great Beer Garden with view of old town. Great for sunset. Order a Salzburger Nockerl & Kaiserschmarrn for dessert. Kaiserschmarrn is a traditional Austrian dessert made of pancakes that have been torn into pieces and sautéed with raisins and sugar.
